In Billy Wilder's cinematic homage to the spirit of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, British stage luminary Robert Stephens plays Holmes, while Colin Blakely is his friend and chronicler Dr. Watson. This self-described "hitherto suppressed and thoroughly fascinating" tale concerns Holmes' search for a missing mining engineer -- a case that may have a far-reaching effect on the national security of England. Along the way, Holmes falls in love for the first time in his life, with enigmatic foreign beauty Gabrielle Valladon (Genevieve Page). In this 1970 film, Wilder emphasizes such then-current topics as homosexuality (notably during the film's prologue) and drug addiction. Christopher Lee, a former screen Holmes himself, has a cameo (minus toupee) as Sherlock's brother Mycroft Holmes. Heavily re-edited and rearranged both before and after its release, The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes was a box-office disappointment when it came out in 1970. Since that time, its reputation has grown immeasurably, especially among those lucky enough to have seen a complete print.
1907. A mysterious criminal known as Fantomas terrorizes London. Only Sherlock Holmes believes in his existence, and he has begun laying the groundwork to arrest him, but Fantomas strikes first, and murders the Great Detective in circumstances that point suspicion at an innocent man. A young Harry Dickson and Sherlock Holmes' niece, Emily, must expose Fantomas before Scotland Yard sends her fiance to the gallows. This never-before-translated play was initially performed in Belgium in 1914 for a few weeks before World War I began and has never been restaged since. The play was translated and adapted by Frank J. Morlock, author of Sherlock Holmes The Grand Horizontals in which Holmes also crosses swords with Fantomas. The book includes an introduction, afterword and chronology of Fantomas by Jean-Marc Lofficier.

Legendary detective Sherlock Holmes is a byword for intelligence and efficiency. Not any more. Detailing some of his less famous exploits, including the infamous drive by dumpings of 1894, this rare volume covers a side of Holmes scarcely seen by the public the real one. Only this collection reveals the mystery of the lingering stench, how Professor Moriarty didn't die and the truth behind the sinister Underpants of Death, a tale to freeze the blood and rapidly unblock the colon.
Someone in London has driven several prominent men to madness and suicide. Normally, Scotland Yard would call in Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) to help solve the case, but Holmes has recently perished in an accident. Or has he? Officially declared dead, Holmes is able to move about undetected as he tries to find out who's behind the rash of suicides-and why. The culprit turns out to be the bewitching, deadly Adrea Spedding (Gale Sondergaard), and for once Holmes seems to have met his match. The now-famous climax finds a bound-and-gagged Holmes hidden behind a shooting-gallery target, while his faithful assistant Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce) unwittingly prepares to blast away at the target with live ammunition (in wartime, yet). Filled to overflowing with amusing dialogue and devilishly clever plot twists (one of them involving an autistic pygmy!), Sherlock Holmes and the Spider Woman is among the best of the Universal Holmes series. Best bit: Told to "act inconspicuous", Inspector Lestrade (Dennis Hoey) ceremoniously rolls his eyes upward and begins whistling loudly-whereupon Dr. Watson chides him with "Inconspicous, Lestrade, not half-witted."
At the request of the Prime Minister of England, Sherlock Holmes searches for a stolen letter which, if published, would undermine the delicate balance of military power and undoubtedly lead to war with a foreign state. A twisted madman with a penchant for destroying all things Napoleonic is the subject of the Sherlock Holmes mystery The Six Napoleons. When an owner of a bust of the notorious leader turns up dead, Holmes and Watson are on the case.

The fourth of Arthur Wonter's quintet of Sherlock Holmes films, Triumph of Sherlock Holmes was a fairly faithful adaptation of Conan Doyle's The Valley of Fear. This time, Holmes (Wontner) and Dr. Watson (Ian Fleming -- not the James Bond author!) investigate a mysterious murder at Birlstone Castle. The killings seem to be tied in with a secret American society of coal-miners called the Scowlers. The architect of all this skullduggery is that "Napoleon of Crime, " Professor Moriarty (the magnificent Lyn Harding), who has conspired with an American gangster (Ben Welden) to assassinate the Pinkerton agent responsible for breaking the back of the Scowlers. There's very little in the way of mystery in Triumph of Sherlock Holmes, but it scores on its full quotient of thrills and chills. Originally 84 minutes, the film was cut to 75 for its American release.
