Enter The Lion, a Posthumous Memoir of Mycroft Holmes is written by Mycroft Holmes towards the end of his life. Mycroft is, of course, Sherlock Holmes's older brother. The adventure Mycroft chronicles takes place in 1875. The story shows a young Sherlock Holmes at the beginning of his career as well as more athletic Mycroft. The Story: A group of Americans make a visit to the British Government at Whitehall, soon after one of the Americans is shot. With both the British government and crime involved, it is natural that Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes are enlisted to sort out the incidents. But it is a dark and convoluted mystery they have been charged to unravel, one that involves spies and conspiracies, and a plot to overthrow the American Government and replace it with a renewed Confederacy as part of the British Empire. We follow the Holmes Brothers as they travel through Victorian London sorting out clues and exchanging banter. Along they way, we meet a Sargeant Lestrade and discover the initial events that create the famous animosity between Professor Moriarty and Sherlock Holmes. Can Mycroft and Sherlock keep the British Government, now headed by Benjamin Disraeli, from succumbing to the tempation of returning America to British rule? The Writing: Micheal P. Hodel and Sean M. Wright have provided the reader with a a well written and well plotted novel. This is in a way, an "historical novel," for many footnotes are provided that give substance to the fictional events. And it is certainly fun to see a young Sherlock Holmes who is still learning the craft of dectection. As well as a Mycroft that has not yet grown too corpulent to move through the story...
